Batty happenings in Pontiac!

Baturday News is a weekly blog written by Rachael, a high school student, bat advocate, and Save Lucy volunteer. Rachael’s interest in bats was sparked by the big brown bats that used the outside of her former home for a winter roost. Rachael has been writing the Baturday News for over three years.

Hi everyone! I hope you all had a good week! I know I did because it is summer vacation! I finally got to relax and watch the bats flying around outside! I have seen a few that like to fly around my house at night and eat all the bugs. I could really use their help because I am starting to find mosquito bites, and I don’t know about you, but I don’t really want all the bugs.

I found a couple of really interesting articles about bats. They are both about a new site opening up in Pontiac, Michigan. The Organization for Bat Conservation is opening up a Bat Zone for injured, orphaned, or elderly bats. The new location is twice the size of the conservation’s previous location and will be open to the public starting today, July 1. There will be several different species of bats, and some other nocturnal animals too. They will have owls, a skunk, and a sloth.

They are hoping that moving locations will help them study urban bats in the Pontiac area. Hopefully they will be able to help the bat population in the area. The organization is also planning on having community events that will teach people about bats.

I think this would be a totally amazing place to visit. Michigan is a little far from my home, but if any of you are in the Pontiac area, I hope you’ll be able to visit them. If you do, please tell me all about it in the comment section. I would love to know what it is like!

If you would like to read the articles, you can read them here and here.

I hope you all have a good week. Happy 4th of July!!!
