Hi everyone! I hope you all had a good week! I am happy we have a long weekend.
Since its almost Halloween, I decided to research “strange” bats. I guess my definition of strange is different than others, because my research led me to one that that is more adorable than strange. It’s called the Banana bat!
Banana bats are tiny bats that only weigh about 4 grams. They have brown fur all over, that is lighter on their stomachs. Even though these bats are called Banana bats, they don’t actually eat bananas! Banana bats mainly eat soft insects like gnats and mosquitoes. They get their name from the fact that they like to roost in the leaves of banana trees. In addition to banana trees, these bats can be found in old buildings, bunches of fruit, Strelizia plants and debris.
Banana bats are found in the wooded areas from the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Northern Province, and to the north of Africa all the way to the Ivory Coast.
